The power of micro-memoir is its brevity, its limited scope. Rather than attempting to put big swaths of our lives onto paper, we focus our attention on small, pivotal, fleeting moments. By zooming in, we discover stories we never knew to look for, ones that often feel more potent and impactful than longer works on grander subjects.

A worthy and complete art form unto itself, micro-memoir can also serve as a strong foundation for a creative practice. First, the act of focusing on small moments is revolutionary for creativity, opening our eyes to the inspiration in each day, each moment. Secondly, every larger work consists of smaller components, meaning that each piece of micro-memoir might serve as a building block for a larger body of work.

Micro-memoir is not limited to the written form. Autobiographical comics, combining word and image, are an incredible art form unto themselves. Making journal comics and exploring visual language will be a big part of this multidisciplinary workshop. You don’t have to call yourself a ‘writer’ or an ‘artist’ to make tiny true stories and sketches.

This retreat is for anyone who wants to cultivate a creative practice rooted in everyday life, a sustaining habit of observation, reflection, and documentation.Over the course of our week together, we’ll share tried-and-true approaches to writing and making art from everyday life, as well as skills to help participants build a sustainable, long-term creative practice at home.

Molly will help you access memories that matter and write vividly from within them, exploring why we remember what we do. Nadine will lead sessions on writing tiny love stories, playing with experimental forms and structures, and revision, including how short pieces often become doorways to longer-form work. Hallie will lead you in the development of your own visual language through making daily journal comics, and help you view your sketchbook as a space to create freely with words and images in all iterations.

Workshop Schedule:
Sunday Night: Welcome Reception at 6pm
Monday – Friday: 9am – 4pm
*Subject to change*
