The desert light, color, and culture have inspired generations of dreamers, artists, writers, and adventurers. There is a reason the high desert atmosphere is enticing to the watercolor painter. The colors seem crisper, the view clearer, and the subject matter is alluring. Our course will endeavor to capture some of the spirit of the place, and that is best done outside. There is no better teacher than nature.

As artists, we will be surrounded by choices. Subject matter and variations of color and light abound in 360 degrees. Sometimes it is hard to focus on what goes into a painting. A simple sketch of a scene helps lock things down. Playing with composition can add personality. Choosing from local color incorporates variety. In our workshop, we will explore simple methods to get our work started outdoors. A simple palette of colors, a few brushes, and good paper are all we need. Venturing outdoors is not as daunting as some may think, and in my experience, students come away with an understanding that, yes, they can do this.

We will work on the decisions that help a good plein air painting succeed. Simplifying subject matter, using effective color mixing, and employing expressive brushwork can work in harmony to produce great results. Towards the end of our day, we will head into the studio to see how we might adapt or change our day's work into a more “finished” painting. As a group we will often learn from each other as well. It is quite fascinating to see what students come up with!

I cannot convey enough how important my jump to painting outdoors was. My work really improved, and I learned how to make the quick, vital decisions that can lead to a great painting. I hope you can join me for this spring workshop in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Workshop Schedule:
Sunday Night: Welcome Meet and Greet at 6pm
Monday – Thursday: 9am – 4pm
Friday: 9am – 2pm

*Subject to change*

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0667/8711/5148/files/2.Vermillion_Cliffs_watercolor_class.jpg?v=1784824739
