About This Workshop

Join Heidi Parkes in Santa Fe for 5 days of hand piecing a quilt top! Heidi grew up visiting her maternal grandmother in Santa Fe, and this location is close to her heart. Students will have some adventures visiting the Georgia O’keeffe Museum, interacting in Santa Fe’s Plaza, and visiting a local fabric shop. Students will also hear about Heidi’s travel and diaristic quilts, and will learn many practical techniques and poetic concepts for tracking a trip in a quilt. This workshop will focus on piecing the patchwork or quilt top, and students will have the freedom to quilt (or not quilt!) their patchworks when they return home. As Heidi did in the quilt that she began while traveling in India in 2019, students will begin their quilts with a single cut of fabric.  Students may work with any size, but 5×5′ is the suggested format. Students can learn more about this quilt in Heidi’s webinar discussing the quilt for its exhibition in Remnants at The Wisconsin Museum of Quilts and Fiber Art, seen here:

Class Schedule:

2-5pm, We will share our quilt tops with the group, receiving feedback and encouragement as we sew. Then, Heidi will share some additional techniques with everyone, as-per the interests of the group.

Friday – 9am-noon, Travel prep! Students will be returning home, and we want to prep our quilts to make the most of that time. What can be cut, ironed, pinned, or prepared now? Heidi will share her favorite ways to do this.

2-5pm, Conversation and sewing: We’ll enjoy our prepped quilts, and start sewing things down while we reminisce, ask questions, and share about our quilts. We will also casually discuss our plans for quilting/finishing our patchworks. We will close with a class photo.

Level: Beginners – experienced. This workshop is thematic, and will cover the idea of a travel quilt along with some unconventional quilt piecing techniques that are accessible to beginners and exciting to experienced sewists.
