Whether bright and sunny or a low overcast I always try to capture an authentic sense of the particular light in a scene. Focusing on value and color temperature relationships in a painting, as well as paying close attention to edges, allows me the flexibility to capture any kind of light in a realistic manner. Painting the desert landscape is no different. We will focus primarily on these three aspects of painting: value, temperature, and edges, as they apply to the unique landscape of the desert Southwest. I tend to use a flexible but more limited palette that works equally well for a variety of lighting situations and color harmonies, so as part of the broader focus we will also spend considerable time discussing how to mix the pigments, since after all our job is ultimately to see a color, accurately mix it, and apply it with precision and gusto.
