About This Workshop

Organic Applique is the practice of developing a skill base that can be applied to published patterns or unique projects on quilts, wall hangings, cushions or even your clothing!  Take control of your creativity while adding a bit of you into every project you make!

Day 1

Focus on Techniques

Demonstrations and tips of easy, fun and effective techniques for preparing applique. Techniques like using Wash Away Applique Paper in a variety of ways, making stems (bias strips) the easy way, and tools and methods for reliable success making circles will be covered. To facilitate the experience we practice each technique by making a label for the quilt.

Day 2

Making Fabric Choices

Regardless of the style of fabrics you work with there are tips and concepts presented with samples and language that are easy to understand and apply.  Participants often say they will “never look at fabric the same,” after this section and eagerly attack their stash!

Day 3

Composition

Here we explore applying basic principles of design in regard to working with different layouts from traditional to modern.  Composition is when we start to apply the motifs we have prepared and plan the piece according to your individual intent.  Quilt, wall hanging, cushion, bag or clothing can all be produced using the applique method.

Day 4

Fine Tuning Your Project

By day four we are fine tuning the principles and ideas presented in each individual project.  Further demonstrations include how to finalize and stabilize the project, stitching both motifs and full projects and making interesting borders or edges.  For the remaining time there is often a happy chatter going on in the room as people settle comfortably into the process!

Day 5

Last Day for Working and Review

Any remaining issues can be resolved. Often if there is time I give a hand quilting demonstration.
