About This Workshop
Step into the timeless world of Japanese surface design through this immersive hands-on workshop dedicated to the elegant art of Katazome — Japanese paste-resist dyeing — and Katagami, the intricate hand-cut stencils used to create it.
Over several days, you’ll explore every layer of this centuries-old process: from designing and cutting your own katagami stencil to mixing rice paste resist, applying it with precision, and dyeing in indigo or natural pigments to create luminous patterns on cloth. Along the way, you’ll discover how layering motifs, resists, and colors creates depth and complexity — a visual poetry of shadow and light.
Whether you’re new to Katazome or expanding an existing indigo practice, this workshop offers both technical mastery and aesthetic insight. You’ll leave with a portfolio of finished textiles, your own reusable stencil, and the knowledge to continue this beautiful, meditative art form in your own studio.
Techniques covered:
- Katagami stencil cutting and design
- Rice paste preparation and application
- Layering techniques for complex patterning
