Permission and The New Memoirist
Genre: Writing
Type of Medium: Memoir
Availability: Spaces Available
Instructor:
Workshop Description:
No matter who we are -- an experienced memoirist or someone who is new to the craft -- these daunting questions touch every one of us: Who am I to tell my story? Do I have permission? How do I know whether it is my story to write? How does shame impact storytelling? Together, these issues can keep the memoirist from moving into a place where voice, character, and story are free to emerge unencumbered by fear and trepidation.
In this generative workshop, we will explore what it means to transcend creative anxiety; together, we will explore the magic in the mundane and how the creation of engaging personal narrative results from the practice of making an inquiry into the nature of the stories we carry at a visceral level, in order to get to a place of narrative clarity.
In this workshop, which will include generative exercises as well as short readings, we will ask you to come with 2500 words of the memoir you are working on, a willingness to unravel process and permission, and an acknowledgement that the impulse to tell one’s story must be honored.
Each class meeting will include generative exercises, readings, and the sharing of work in a welcoming atmosphere.
Workshop Schedule:
Sunday: Check-In at Marlin Classroom - anytime between 3pm - 6pm
Monday – Thursday: 9am – 4pm
Friday: 9am - 12pm
