Unfolding in Santa Fe

Genre: Mixed Media

Type of Medium: Sketch, draw, paint, and collages

Location: Santa Fe - Hilton

Availability: Spaces Available

Workshop Description:

I am so excited about teaching this retreat!! Throughout our week together I will guide you in developing a body of work that represents the essence of you, with the backdrop of Santa Fe’s unique light and atmosphere. We will spend time both indoors and outdoors in our beautiful studio and wandering through the streets of charming Santa Fe and unfolding together.

As well as delightful studio time, magical field trips will enhance our experience - you will be enchanted.

We will begin our week with a full day in the studio. In the studio, we will begin with creating a handmade book which we will use throughout our week. We will sketch and draw, paint, and add scraps and collages from our adventures in this stunning land.

On Tuesday, we will spend the morning creating in the studio before heading out after lunch to visit the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum and experience the work and story of one of New Mexico’s most iconic artists.

Wednesday will give us another full day in the studio to continue developing our work and exploring the ideas, materials, and inspiration gathered throughout the week.

On Thursday, we will venture out for a full-day field trip to Ghost Ranch, immersing ourselves in the extraordinary landscape, colors, and atmosphere of northern New Mexico. Our time at Ghost Ranch will give us another opportunity to gather inspiration, sketch, take nature notes, and collect ideas to bring back into our work.

Friday will be our final full studio day, allowing us time to bring the many pieces of our week together.

As each of our projects unfold you will see how they complement and build upon each other, all the way working together as you create a unique and exciting body of work.

Our main project will be to create a fabric multi-layered wall hanging. The fabrics will be natural linens, (that I provide) which we will glaze and dye in class. We will stitch these beautiful pieces by hand and attach natural or found objects as focal points.

Other projects will be but not limited to:

  • Mark making and creating your own personal symbols

  • Painting abstract botanical sketches

  • Painting fabric

  • Taking nature notes and reflections from our explorations

  • Making a handmade book from scratch

  • Painting small landscapes or cityscapes

  • A paper and/or fabric scroll

  • Exploring Santa Fe

  • A talisman or assemblage made from found objects

  • And much more!

For those who would like to add another special Santa Fe experience to the week, there will also be an optional Sky Railway Sunset Serenade, an evening journey through the New Mexico landscape as the sun sets. This optional excursion is not included in the workshop tuition and will be available for an additional fee.

Join me and create beautiful works of art and unlock your own personal story. The story of you!
