Getting to Madeline Island!
Madeline Island, La Pointe WI, is the largest island of the 22 Apostle Islands on Lake Superior’s south shore. Once an outpost for French, British, and American fur traders, today it is known for its natural beauty, wide sandy beaches, and peaceful, small-town charm.
Accessible only by ferry, the journey to Madeline Island feels like stepping into a world, an inspiring retreat where creativity comes alive.
The Madeline Island School of the Arts (MISA) is just 1.5 miles from the La Pointe ferry dock, surrounded by the island’s serene landscapes and endless sources of inspiration.

Ferry to La Pointe, Madeline Island:
The ferry from Bayfield, Wisconsin to the Island runs on a set schedule every half hour during the summer, taking about 20 minutes to cross.
Reservations aren’t accepted; it operates on a first-come, first-served basis.

Flying – Duluth International Airport (DLH)
DLH is the closest regional airport, about 90 miles from the port town of Bayfield, WI.
The airport is served by Delta and United Airlines, with daily flights from Minneapolis (Delta) and daily flights from Chicago (United). Major car rental agencies are available.
MISA/Duluth Airport Shuttle
We offer a round-trip shuttle from Duluth International Airport to the campus for $500, which includes your ferry ticket. Please plan on arriving between 9AM and 3PM for shuttle pick ups and Saturday departing flights can be no earlier than 11AM.
