Jenny Haynes
Genre: Quilting
Jenny Haynes (née Nilsson) studied Pattern Cutting and Tailoring in Stockholm followed by
Fashion and Textiles at the London College of Fashion before fully turning her attention to quilts
under the name Papper, Sax, Sten. She challenged the traditional approach to quilting, pushing
the boundaries and thereby defining a style which has become synonymous with Jenny Haynes
and has notably influenced established & experimental designers.
Jenny’s quilts and patterns have been published in numerous magazines, she has exhibited her
quilts in art galleries around the world and has won awards at QuiltCon, the largest quilt show in
the world for modern quilts.
Jenny has collaborated with multiple artists including renowned Scottish textile artist and
designer, Donna Wilson, producing a range of quilt patterns based on Donna’s product range but
incorporating Jenny’s trademark style.
In 2017 the V&A Museum in London, along with the publishers Thames & Hudson, asked her to
contribute to the book ‘Patchwork & Quilting’.
When Jenny isn’t designing quilts, she gives talks and workshops for guilds, museums and textile
venues around the globe. The craftsmanship, skill and modern take on quilting and design are the
primary reasons given in the invitations she receives from museums and art retreats across the
world. She counts amongst her masterclass venues, prestigious institutions like the V&A (London),
Textiel Museum (the Netherlands) and Grampians Textiles (Australia) as her proudest
engagements.
Jenny’s students are primarily textile artists, 75% of which are based in the USA. Many have
gone on to win awards in renowned shows after taking a class with Jenny. The workshops take a
holistic approach to quilting. They not only tackle her complex technical approach and
craftsmanship of this traditional craft but also guide the participants through the process of
developing their own style as well as looking at multiple aspects including construction, colour
theory and composition, all in a new and pioneering way.
Jenny’s unique approach has taken the craft into the realms of highly desirable modern art pieces
and brought a new audience into what has been seen as a traditional craft in the past, securing its
longevity for future generations.
