About This Workshop
During this workshop, students will learn that the accordion, one of the oldest book structures, can transform to become some of the most innovative, modern structures around. This workshop offers students the opportunity to become acquainted with the deceptively simple accordion, and build on it throughout the week’s sessions until it becomes a sculpturally impressive form capable of holding interesting stories and visual content. We’ll investigate how other forms like flag books, leporellos, map folds, and various one page structures all use a simple accordion fold as a foundation.
Demonstrations of various book binding techniques using paper and fabric, mark making, mono printing and paper cutting will give students some interesting foundational starting points to explore while experimenting with the individual content of their book forms. There will be space for further exploration of content as it relates to the forms the students are making, and also through samples of the instructor’s work which will be shared and discussed throughout the week.
