Workshop Description:
A Watercolor, Acrylic Ink & Mixed Media Retreat
What becomes possible when we approach creativity with curiosity instead of judgment? What happens when we slow down, pay attention, and allow wonder to guide the process?
Set amidst the natural beauty of Madeline Island, this immersive mixed-media retreat invites artists of all experience levels to reconnect with their creativity through watercolor, acrylic inks, intuitive mark-making, and playful exploration. Throughout the week, we will experiment with a variety of materials and approaches while developing a deeper relationship with observation, curiosity, and the creative process itself.
Through guided exercises, outdoor painting sessions, nature-inspired studies, intuitive painting, and open studio time, participants will learn to loosen perfectionism, trust their instincts, and discover new ways of responding to both the world around them and the work unfolding on the page.
Together, we will explore the idea of creative portals—unexpected openings that appear when we stay curious, follow what captures our attention, and allow a painting to reveal itself over time. Participants will create a collection of small studies, exploratory works, and larger mixed-media paintings while building confidence in their own authentic creative voice.
Topics explored throughout the week include:
- Watercolor and acrylic ink techniques for creating luminous layers, movement, texture, and depth
- Nature-based observation practices that strengthen the art of noticing
- Shadow studies and outdoor sketching that encourage presence, spontaneity, and creative freedom
- Intuitive painting approaches that cultivate trust, confidence, and personal expression
- Creative mark-making using a variety of tools and materials
- Layering, composition, contrast, and focal points through exploration and experimentation
- Techniques for moving beyond perfectionism and embracing the unexpected
- Developing paintings over time by revisiting, responding to, and building upon earlier work
- Creating personal portal paintings inspired by curiosity, possibility, and discovery
- Building a sustainable creative practice rooted in wonder, observation, and play
This retreat is designed for anyone seeking fresh inspiration, renewed creative confidence, or a deeper connection to their artistic practice. Whether you are returning to creativity after time away or looking to expand an existing practice, you'll leave with new skills, meaningful artwork, and a renewed appreciation for the power of curiosity to guide both art and life.
All experience levels are welcome.
