5-Day Cyanotype Intensive with Julia Whitney Barnes

Genre: Mixed Media

Type of Medium: Cyanotype

Location: Madeline Island

Availability: Spaces Available

Workshop Description:

This 5-day workshop with artist Julia Whitney Barnes explores a painterly and experimental approach to creating cyanotypes on a variety of surfaces. Cyanotype is an endlessly versatile medium, offering countless ways to combine processes and techniques both during the creation of a print and after it has been developed.

Julia has spent decades developing an artmaking practice that brings together printmaking, painting, alternative-process photography, and a deep engagement with botany and the natural world. Throughout the workshop, participants will explore cyanotype as both a photographic process and a flexible medium for experimentation, layering, mark-making, and image-making.

Working with local flora and other found materials, participants will foster an understanding of the cyanotype process while discovering ways to push the traditional blue and white prints into more painterly and personal territory.

Day 1: Introduction to Cyanotype
Day 2: Objects, Plants & Photographic Sources
Day 3: Experimental Cyanotype
Day 4: Toning, Painting & Collage
Day 5: Developing a Personal Practice

*Please note that the day-to-day schedule will be impacted by sunshine, clouds, and/or rain so we will maximize the opportunity for printing when we have sun and go over other parts of the process during less sunny days.
