Explorations in Bead Embroidery

Availability: Spaces Available

If you have some experience with bead embroidery and are eager to learn more, this is the workshop for you. In it we’ll build on the techniques of beginning bead embroidery (seed stitch, backstitch, stacked stitches, etc.) to explore some of the myriad textures, designs, and dimensions still to be created with bead embroidery.

We’ll pay particular attention to non-traditional beads and embellishables such as stone chips, cabochons, and various types of buttons, as well as delving into new and innovative ways to combine seed beads. Santa Fe has a rich and amazing history in the arts and fine crafts, and we’ll take an afternoon to visit a local bead shop or two as well as the fascinating Museum of International Folk Art.

This workshop contains a mix of technique and concept introduction with lots of individual guidance for students to explore their own designs and specific interests.

SCHEDULE:

Monday: Creating networks of individual beads with seed stitch, brick stitch, and right-angle weave

Tuesday: Working with stone chips to create architectural elements, vine-covered walls, and incorporating non-beads into stone-chip and textured beadwork

Wednesday morning: Embellishing netting

Wednesday afternoon: Field Trip

  •         Beadweavers of Santa Fe and/or Earthfire Gems Gallery
  •         Museum of International Folk Art

Thursday: Building up from simple stacks: secured and unsecured fringe, more dimensional bead embroidery, and beaded gardens

Friday: Working with irregularly-shaped bezels and embellishing bezels

Workshop Schedule:
Sunday Night: Welcome Meet and Greet at 6pm
Monday – Friday: 9am – 4pm
