Painting with Wool: Exploring Color, Texture & Expression through Needle Felting '26

Availability: Spaces Available

Discover the surprisingly expressive and endlessly enjoyable world of two-dimensional needle felting in this immersive workshop with fiber artist Dani Ives. Using wool fibers as your “paint” and barbed needles as your brushes, you’ll learn how to layer, blend, and form with wool to create richly textured artwork on fabric—no previous experience required.

Throughout the workshop, Dani will guide you through a variety of techniques to help you gain confidence and control with the medium. You’ll explore how to blend fibers for painterly effects, how to use texture and layering for depth and detail, and how to apply foundational color theory to bring your compositions to life—whether you're working in realism or abstraction.

Students are encouraged to bring their own artistic voice into the process. Needle felting is incredibly versatile and works beautifully for landscapes, portraits (both human and animal!), botanicals, still life, and more. You’ll also learn about sourcing materials, choosing the right tools, and how to finish and frame your pieces for display.

In addition to developing one larger, main piece over the course of the week, you will also have the opportunity to create a few smaller studies or exploratory pieces. The subject matter is entirely up to you—landscapes, animals, botanicals, or something more abstract—so you are free to tailor the experience to your own interests and creative goals. The combination of a sustained project and smaller, low-pressure exercises offers both depth and play, while building confidence and expanding your artistic personal style.

Demonstrations, step-by-step exercises, and plenty of one-on-one guidance will support your learning throughout the workshop. Whether you're brand new to fiber art or an experienced maker looking for a fresh approach to color and composition, this workshop offers a joyful, approachable way to explore your creativity—one fiber at a time.
