Shibori Mastery: Traditional Indigo, Pattern, and Process

Shibori is far more than a collection of decorative patterns. It is a thoughtful textile language built through stitch, tension, compression, repetition, and indigo.

In this five-day immersive workshop, students will explore Japanese shibori through Suzanne Connors’ progressive Signature Series approach. The workshop moves beyond a general introduction to folded and tied resist, offering participants a deeper understanding of how traditional patterns are constructed, controlled, repeated, and adapted for contemporary textile work.

Drawing upon Suzanne’s immersive studies in Japan, the workshop introduces both foundational techniques and patterns not commonly included in many shibori classes.

Students will work with traditional Japanese tools, specialized threads, needles, stitching stands, and natural indigo while learning how materials, spacing, tension, and cloth preparation influence the final result.

The guiding philosophy of the workshop is:

This approach respects the origins and integrity of the techniques while making them accessible and practical for contemporary artists, teachers, and independent studio practice.

Rather than concentrating on a single finished object, students will build an extensive collection of samples and reference pieces that can inform future work in quilting, garments, wall pieces, book arts, mixed media, and textile design.

What Makes the Signature Series Different?
Many shibori workshops introduce several techniques quickly or focus primarily on producing a finished scarf or cloth. The Signature Series is structured as a progressive study of pattern and process.

Students learn not only how to create a design, but why the design develops as it does. Each technique builds upon the previous one, helping participants understand the  relationship between stitch placement, compression, thread tension, folding, dye penetration, oxidation, and repetition.

The workshop includes an expanded vocabulary of traditional shibori patterns, including designs that Suzanne encountered through concentrated study with Japanese textile artists and craftspeople. Some of these techniques are rarely presented in introductory workshops and require specialized tools, careful preparation, and a more deliberate approach to construction.

Students will also work with traditional tools and supplies that are often unavailable in general surface-design classes. These may include Japanese shibori needles, kumo and  tesuji stands, traditional bobbins, Japanese threads, binding materials, and specialized equipment used to create consistent tension and repeated pattern.

The emphasis is on mastery through observation and practice rather than simply completing a project. Students leave with a strong technical foundation and a deeper appreciation for the discipline, patience, and craftsmanship within Japanese textile traditions.

Techniques Explored
Techniques may include:

• Nui shibori foundations
• Ori-nui folded stitch resist
• Mokume, or wood-grain pattern
• Karamatsu, or larch pattern
• Tesuji striped resist
• Kumo bound resist
• Miura looped resist
• Patterned gathering and compression
• Repeated and mirrored stitch structures
• Layered resist processes
• Controlled indigo values through successive dipping
• Combining techniques to create more complex compositions
  

The final selection of patterns may be adjusted to suit the experience and interests of the group.

Natural Indigo
Students will work with a natural reduction indigo vat and learn the care and rhythm required for successful indigo dyeing.

Instruction will include:

• Preparing cloth for indigo
• Understanding vat balance and reduction
• Proper dipping and handling
• Oxidation between dips
• Building multiple shades of blue
• Protecting stitched and compressed resists
• Rinsing, neutralizing, and finishing dyed textiles
• Evaluating dye penetration and resist quality

Students will observe how repeated dipping creates depth while learning that darker indigo is achieved gradually rather than through prolonged immersion.

By the end of the workshop, students will:

• Understand how to work responsibly with a natural indigo vat

• Learn how to evaluate and troubleshoot resist results
• Gain confidence adapting traditional processes to personal artwork
