Storytelling through Map Quilts

Genre: Quilting

Type of Medium: Applique, machine sewing, hand sewing, improvisation, embroidery

Location: Madeline Island

3 DAY WORKSHOP

Availability: Spaces Available

Over the course of three days, we will create place-based map quilts that tell stories of place, adventure, and belonging using a variety of modern applique techniques.

First we will explore using paper maps as the templates for hand cut paper stencils to create a small map quilt which by the end of the three days will be embellished and then gallery mounted over a canvas, ready to be displayed in your home. Shea will also demonstrate her processes using a laser cutter and dye cutting machines to make precise and accurate designs integrating computer-based graphic design programs during a field trip to the Madeline Island Library’s Maker’s Space.

Participants are encouraged to bring a simple map of a place near and dear to their hearts to use as a template for the workshop. This workshop is best for people with intermediate sewing skills and will cover topics including color theory, modern applique, machine quilting, embroidery, and finishing techniques for wall hanging. While the workshop will focus on storytelling through maps, the skills learned are applicable to all sorts of designs using modern applique techniques that participants will be able to apply on their own.

Class Schedule Overview:

The first day we will begin by using paper maps as the templates for hand cut paper stencils to create a mini map quilt and talk about how maps tell stories of place and belonging. On the second day we will continue to work on our map quilts and also visit the Madeline Island Library where Shea will demonstrate how she uses a laser cutter and dye cutting machines to create intricate map art. On the third day participants will finish their map quilts and learn how to professionally finish them as wall hangings.
