Workshop Description:
If you’re looking to move beyond simply documenting the landscape and to create photographs that tell a story about what a place—and your experience in it—means to you, then grab your camera and join Colleen Miniuk for this immersive five-day creative photography workshop along the breathtaking Monterey Peninsula.
From crashing surf and retreating waves to swirling foam, reflections, tide pools, fog, and wind-swept cypress trees, this dynamic coastal environment provides an excellent classroom and muse. We’ll explore how things like motion, rhythm, pattern, contrast, and light can shape our visual storytelling. Instead of asking “What does this place look like?” we’ll focus on questions like, “How does this place make me feel, remember, or wonder?”
Through a thoughtful blend of classroom presentations, field trips and exercises, and an image review session, you’ll learn to make—not take—photographs that translate your life experiences through ever-changing waterscapes and landscapes.
In a safe, supportive, and encouraging environment, participants will learn how to:
-
Establish a unique personal connection with nature through curiosity, mindfulness, and visualization before ever using the camera.
-
Tap into the creative and “visual journey” processes to develop a visual experience within your photographic frame.
-
Translate observations, emotions, ideas, narratives, and experiences into meaningful photographic expression through deliberate creative and technical choices.
-
Simplify complex coastal scenes into compelling compositions using line, shape, layers, light, and visual flow.
-
Utilize shutter speed, ISO, filters, and other exposure techniques to interpret the energy, movement, and rhythm of water and life.
-
Move beyond literal representations of land and water through metaphorical association, conceptual blending, and special techniques such as intentional camera movement and multiple exposures.
-
Develop confidence in your own artistic voice while discovering what makes a photograph successful in your eyes
Rather than chasing iconic viewpoints or collecting postcard images, this workshop encourages experimentation, play, and personal growth across a diverse landscapes and waterscapes. You'll be invited to set expectations aside, let go of perfection, honor your human experience through visual storytelling, and cultivate a deeper relationship with both nature and your own artistic approach.
This workshop is best suited for lifelong learners who are interested in expressing themselves creatively through photography and discovering new ways to transform their own experiences into art. Come prepared to listen to the pulse of the ocean, explore with intention, and create photographs that reveal not just what you see, but rather what moves you.
