Embroidered Closet

Genre: Fiber Arts

Type of Medium: Embroidery stitches and hand-stitching techniques

Location: Pacific Grove

Availability: Spaces Available

Workshop Description:

This class is a love letter to embroidery, creative play and sustainable style. We will use clothing from our own wardrobe to decorate and explore many different types of embroidery stitches and hand-stitching techniques inspired by the rich, long history of embroidery. This class looks at the items in our closets as blank canvases for the creative exploration of design, pattern, texture and color through hand embroidery and is rooted in a slow fashion ethos to prolong their use.

We’ll take a deep dive into historical and personal inspirations looking at examples of different cultural practices, folk embroidery and personal projects. Learn how to create your own patterns, concept out patterns and how to transfer them onto several types of materials. Each day of class will focus on different fabrics, like jersey, woven, or knits, and a wide variety of hand stitches.

Play and practice are at the core of this class. If jumping into your clothing sounds intimidating we can also make use of provided fabric scraps to create a library of samples for future projects and refine skills and ideas. Students will work in community developing their personal projects in a warm and supportive environment.
